Lisa Kachnic, MD

Lisa Kachnic, MD, FASTRO joined the Columbia University Medical Center and Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) in the fall of 2019 as Chair of the Radiation Oncology Department and Associate Director of Regional Strategy of HICCC. She is the former Chairperson of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She received her undergraduate degree from Boston College and her medical degree from Tufts University. Dr. Kachnic completed her residency in Radiation Oncology at Harvard University, her last year as chief resident.
Dr. Kachnic’s primary areas of interest include assessing novel radiation technologies for gastrointestinal malignancies and outcomes/symptoms management research. Dr. Kachnic is actively involved in the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) adult oncology research cooperative groups, including NRG Oncology’s (National Surgical Adjuvant Breast & Bowel Project, Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and the Gynecological Oncology Group) Gastrointestinal (GI) strategic committee where she is also the Associate PI chair of their NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) and chair of its Cancer Control and Prevention Division. Kachnic also serves as Anorectal co-chairperson for the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), where she is also the Multi-modality Executive Officer. Importantly, her NCI clinical trials have changed the standard of care in several GI malignancies, most notably anal cancer. As a tribute to these leadership efforts, Dr. Kachnic has been awarded NCI funding from NRG and SWOG and was the 2008 recipient of the first Radiation Therapy Oncology Group’s “Next Generation Investigator” award.
